Sweet Sixteen No. 1 seeds are 82-22 SU since 1985. Last year, just two No. 1 seeds made it to the Sweet Sixteen, and No. 1 Villanova went on to win the NCAA Tournament championship while going 6-0. That’s when the Sweet 16 betting action really picks up. March Madness betting is hot throughout the NCAA tournament. The final rounds, though, like Sweet 16 betting and Elite 8 betting, see most of the action. While teams only need to win two games to make it to the Sweet 16 betting brackets, it’s no easy feat.
For the first time in NCAA history, each betting favorites in the round of 32 have made it through into the March Madness Sweet 16. The 16 teams still competing for the championship will compete on Thursday and Friday. Bettors around the country are now having to choose whether or not to go with an underdog.
It’s an incredible time in college basketball. Let’s take a look at the results from the round of 32, and what the oddsmakers are predicting heading into the Sweet 16.
Which Teams Moved On to the March Madness Sweet 16?
As we just mentioned, all of the betting favorites won their games this past weekend, yet there were a few close calls. The number-one seed in the tournament, Duke, barely scraped by Central Florida in what would have been the biggest upset of the 2019 March Madness tournament. LSU also had a very close game against Maryland.
The majority of the wins in round two were blowouts. Virginia and Gonzaga, two March Madness betting favorites, won their games by double-digit numbers. Overall, there were no upsets that took place, and the competition is extremely high.
The bracket for the upcoming round of 16 is now set. Below are the matchups set to take place this week.
Thursday, March 28th
- Florida State vs. Gonzaga
- Purdue vs. Tennessee
- Texas Tech vs. Michigan
- Oregon vs. Virginia
Friday, March 29th
- LSU vs. Michigan State
- Auburn vs. North Carolina
- Virginia Tech vs. Duke
- Houston vs. Kentucky
So which teams are favored to win this year’s NCAA Basketball tournament?
2019 March Madness Winner Betting Odds
The top favorites to win March Madness before the tournament began are still competing in the Sweet 16. The odds have changed a little bit, yet these teams remain the hottest picks for basketball betting experts around the country. Let’s take a quick look at the top three favorites right now, courtesy of Bovada Sportsbook.
Duke: +300
Duke is widely considered to be the best college basketball team playing right now. They certainly didn’t look like it against Central Florida last week, yet they did show a few moments of brilliance. Duke has an incredibly talented lineup headlined by Zion Williamson and Tre Jones.
The Blue Devils will be taking on the number-four seed, Virginia Tech, later this week. It should be a competitive game, as Virginia Tech actually holds a win over Duke back in February. At the moment, all of the online sportsbooks in the US list Duke as the favorite to win March Madness this year with current odds of +300.
Virginia: +425
Virginia has the best defense in the NCAA right now. They’re incredible at stopping points and have some solid offensive players in Kyle Guy and De’Andre Hunter. The Cavaliers earned a pretty easy win over Oklahoma on Sunday, and many feel they’ll do the same on Thursday.
Oregon is no push-over. They defeated UC Irvine this past weekend and Wisconsin before that. On paper, Virginia is the better overall team and most predict they’ll get past the Ducks this week. Bovada lists Virginia’s odds to win March Madness at +425.
Gonzaga: +450
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Gonzaga listed as the overall favorite heading into March Madness Sweet 16. They’re coming off an incredible performance against Baylor on Saturday. Gonzaga is taking on FSU this week in a game they’re heavily favored to win.
Florida State’s Phil Cofer is unlikely to play in this game. That’s going to hurt this team’s chances even more. If Gonzaga does win, they may move up to become the top seed in the tournament. This team’s odds to win currently sit at +450.
